Sting and Surge Battle to 2-2 Tie

SUNRISE (May 19, 2021) – In a preseason match between teams from two separate leagues, the FC Surge (WPSL) and the Sunrise Sting (UWS) battled to a 2-2 tie in an exciting match in front of a lively crowd of 177 fans.

Both teams are loaded with talent, the FC Surge, entering their 9th season, were led by veterans April Perry (FIU) and Chrissy Gratz (East Carolina), along with former Sunrise player Amanda Martin (FAU). For the Sting, it was the teams first match to begin a new era of women’s soccer for the Club, featuring a host of returning alumni as well as many other local athletes.

It was a back-and-forth contest. The Sting took an early lead in the 12’ when Chloe Laureano (Yale) passed the ball in the Sunrise defensive end to Maya Gordon (LSU), back to Laureano, who then connected with Julia Grosso (Kentucky) who passed the ball down the right side to a racing Jordan Scandizzo (NSU). Scandizzo crossed the ball to her college teammate Emma Brown for the goal.

Four minutes later, the Surge tied the match when Nicole Baldassini (NJIT), a Sunrise Sting alum, hit a beautiful corner kick that was headed in by Chama Silva (NSU). At half, the game remained tied at 1-1.

The Surge started the second half with a “surge”, but a strong Sting defense led by alum Maya Gordon (LSU), Lilly Graves (UCF), Jade Steele (UCF), and Gaby Moreira (NSU), and later by Sydney Waiters (Cornell) made it tough all night for the Miami team. But what the Surge could not do inside the 18 they did outside in the 60’ minute when April Perry hit a deep line drive over the head of the Sunrise keeper to give the Surge a 2-1 lead. Later in the match, Milan Pierre-Jerome (Maryland) found Brown to make it 2-2 and that is how the game would end.

Between both teams, it was a big night for Nova Southeastern players, they scored three of the four goals in the contest.

Sting Coach Gui Gui Ferreira said “It was the first match, and we have a lot of work to do, but this is a team with a lot of talent, and we will improve day by day. Looking forward to an exciting season.”
