Everything coach Pitu Alvarez knows about soccer suggested his Sunrise Elite squad wasn’t going to win Saturday’s under-15 championship at the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup. The Florida outfit conceded a goal in the 99th minute of overtime that tied the game, then had its first shot in a penalty shootout saved by Arsenal FC US Academy goalkeeper Edwyn Gutierrez. At that point, confidence was not running high for Alvarez or his exhausted players. “Usually you lose a game when you give up a goal with one minute left,” Alvarez said. “I didn’t have confidence at all. But that’s how soccer is. You never know.”
